Grandma in 1910-1930

Grandma was an accomplished pianist and played for the silent movies in the nearby community of Moline, KS   She used to tell stories of when she was a teenager, as well.  A fun Saturday afternoon was hanging out at the train depot to watch travelers pass through town.

Grandma's House (1936 – 1980)

The property was purchased in 1936 by my grandparents.  Grandpa Harry was a harvester by trade in his younger years, then later owned and operated the local pool hall.  As a child I remember visiting him at the pool hall and playing pool using a stepstool and a pool cue made especially for me.  Grandma Gladys was a stay at home wife.  She and her sister, Aunt Georgia (pictured at right), taught me how to embroidery and crochet when I was six.  The products of their teaching appear on about every wall of the house.  She made aprons, rag rugs, embroidered pillowcases and chair sets.

Grandma Gladys used to host frequent family dinners-- my favorite being fresh, deep-fried gulf oysters.

Later Years (1980 – Present)

Following Grandma’s death, my father, Howard Stephens, used the house as a rental property until 2004.  Jack and I renovated the kitchen that year and gave it a new coat of paint throughout.  Our daughter and her family lived in the house until July, 2007.  Jack and I just couldn’t part with a house so full of memories and good times, so we decided to share the house with travelers.
